SAC

1.The history of SAC

        In the automotive industry, it's an evitable trend of development to apply the plastic/fiber composite materials to achieve vehicle safety and light weight. However, to achieve large-scale production of automotive composite parts, new technological challenges remain to be solved. In order to achieve low-cost production, the Society of Automobile Composite (SAC) was established in Japan in March 2012 to organize the raw materials, molding methods, structure/links, and automotive assembly plants of composite materials to discuss the best solutions. At present, over 500 companies have been developed in Japan, in which internal reports of the subcommittee are held every three months and the annual plenary session are held each year. The 2017 Annual Meeting of SAC was held for the first time in a country other than Japan (Donghua University of China), aiming to expand the scope of the study, strengthen international cooperation, and further promote the process of replacing steel with plastic.

Education & Publication about automotive composites

        The goal of this group is to develop a curriculum about   wide   knowledge   on   automotive   composites. The curriculum will be established in a master course of universities.  The purpose of this activities is to increase No. of researchers and engineers specialized in composite materials.  To be a composite researchers,
they should learn:

•Mechanics
•Chemistry (Matrix resin, Interface, and etc.)
•Fracture mechanism
•Anisotropic properties



Fabricating technological development for tape prepreg with thermoplastic

        Fabricating technique of tape prepreg or fibrous intermediate materials with thermoplastic is investigated. The machine can impregnate resin into fiber tows and fabrics with lower cost.

1.Fabricating technological development of weaving reinforcements with near-net-shape
The capability of Jacquard technique is investigated to fabricate complex near-net shaped products and design method by using Jacquard mechanism are developed.



2.Fabrication of braided composite shaft

        Group members investigate basic manufacturing method of braided composite shaft by operating braiding machines. Braided composite shafts are manufactured under the several braiding conditions, and their mechanical properties are studied.


3.Efficient use of kenaf fiber

        Kenaf fiber obtained from Malaysia is investigated as reinforcing fiber of composite materials for automotive application. It is expected that this group’s research activity promotes extensive development of efficient use of kenaf fiber.

4.Tribology of composite materials

        Material design method and structural design method regarding tribology have been studied by Prof. Frank Haupert. A database of tribology for composite materials is also created to promote extensive development of composites industry.

6.FRTP press forming — molding & simulation

        FRTP press forming processes are simulated with a dedicated software under several conditions such as based material's properties and forming conditions. Mechanism of material behavior in press-forming is clarified by comparing the calculation results and actual molding products.

7.Evaluation of interface characterization in FRTP

        To improve interfacial properties for FRTP is very important. Therefore, the properties are characterized by microdroplet method and utilized to improve it.



8.MFW(Multi-supply Filament Winding) working group

        MFW working group improves MFW technology and expand knowledge of MFW with universities and companies of variable field.
